This reagent is available as a colourless liquid which is insoluble in water. It has a melting point of 47.4 C, and a boiling point of 138.5 C. Xylene can be prepared by the methylation of toluene and benzene. The compound is stable under general conditions, however, it is incompatible with strong oxidizing agents.
